How to use TikTok
TikTok’s main advantage over many other social platforms is that it’s just so easy to use. You don’t really need a guide to help you through the app’s intuitive menus, but if you prefer to have a somewhat clear idea of what you can do without screwing anything up, here are some quick tips to get you started.
Download the app for your mobile device of choice, be it an iPhone, an Android phone or a tablet. Just type the name into the official store’s search bar and click on the very first result – you can’t miss it.
Create an account and give the app access to your media folders and your camera to be able to upload and record clips with your phone.
Tap the + sign to add a new video. You will see a familiar looking camera app layout with some pretty recognizable buttons and menus. If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed, don’t worry, we’ll go through the process step by step to make it really simple.
Choose a song you would like to use in your clip out of the thousands of songs available in the app in any genre you prefer. You can use the trim feature to choose when the song kicks in and stops playing to fit the lyrics into the format of your clip. There’s no need to include any unnecessary parts that don’t have any lyrics, for example.
Start recording and create an awesome looking music video on the go by using the pause/continue feature and any of the real-time editing tools available in the easy to use menu. Just to clarify: you need to hold the Record button to film and release it to stop filming, which is actually really intuitive once you get used to the idea. If you want to record hands-free, just tap the countdown icon to the right and start moving or singing when the counter reaches zero. You can switch between your front and back cameras, which can be really useful in some situations. The aspect ratio and the resolution of the recordings will be adjusted automatically on the go.
Edit your video if you want to add some additional effects or finishing touches. Tap the colored circles icon to browse through the available filters and to see if any of them could make your clip even better. The effect will be demonstrated in real time to make it easier for you to choose one to your liking. To add a special FX, tap the clock-looking icon, select the effect you like and tap “Save”.
Share the clip after selecting the settings and options you feel are appropriate. Once you are done recording and editing, just tap “Next”, add a simple description or caption to provide some additional context to your video and maybe throw in a hashtag or two. You can also tag your friends by typing the @ sign and the username you want to mention. You might also want to consider using the built-in multiplatform sharing feature to add the post to other social media, like Twitter, for even more exposure.
